{{about|the concept in Catholic canon law||Pardon}}
{{canon law|Jurisprudence}}
In [Catholic canon law](/source/Catholic_canon_law), an '''indult''' is a permission or [privilege](/source/privilege_(canon_law)), granted by the competent [church](/source/Roman_Catholic_Church) authority – the [Holy See](/source/Holy_See) or the [diocesan bishop](/source/diocesan_bishop), as the case may be – for an exception from a particular norm of church law in an individual case.<ref>[http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07789a.htm Pontifical Indults]</ref>

For example, according to the [canons](/source/Canon_(canon_law)) 692 and 693 of the [1983 ''Code of Canon Law''](/source/1983_Code_of_Canon_Law), an indult is needed when members of the [consecrated life](/source/consecrated_life) want to be dispensed from their [religious vows](/source/religious_vows), or when [priests](/source/Priesthood_in_the_Catholic_Church) and [deacons](/source/Deacon_in_the_Catholic_Church) voluntarily seek to return to the [lay state](/source/Catholic_laity) (usually to marry).<ref>{{Cite web|title=Code of Canon Law – Book II – The People of God – Part II. A recent indult was the one granted in 1984 by [Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II), ''[Quattuor abhinc annos](/source/Quattuor_abhinc_annos)'', which authorised the world's Catholic [bishops](/source/bishops) to permit celebrations of the [Tridentine Mass](/source/Tridentine_Mass) liturgy in their [dioceses](/source/dioceses). This indult was superseded in 2007 by new legislation introduced by [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) in the ''[motu proprio](/source/motu_proprio)'' ''[Summorum Pontificum](/source/Summorum_Pontificum)'', and superseded again in 2021 by ''[Traditionis custodes](/source/Traditionis_custodes)''.
