# Indiara

**Indiara** is a city and [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Brazil) in central-south [Goiás](/source/Goi%C3%A1s) state, [Brazil](/source/Brazil). Indiara is a large producer of soybeans and cotton.

## Location

Indiara is in the [Vale do Rio dos Bois](/source/Vale_do_Rio_dos_Bois) and has municipal boundaries with:

- north: [Palmeiras de Goiás](/source/Palmeiras_de_Goi%C3%A1s)
- south: [Edéia](/source/Ed%C3%A9ia)
- east: [Cezarina](/source/Cezarina)
- west: [Jandaia](/source/Jandaia) and [Acreúna](/source/Acre%C3%BAna)

Indiara is 102 kilometers (southwest) from the state capital, [Goiânia](/source/Goi%C3%A2nia) and is on the edge of highway BR-060 (passing through [Guapó](/source/Guap%C3%B3) and [Cezarina](/source/Cezarina)).

## History

The town began with the construction of the highway between [Goiânia](/source/Goi%C3%A2nia) and [Cuiabá](/source/Cuiab%C3%A1), [Mato Grosso](/source/Mato_Grosso) in 1958. First came a restaurant, a "churrascaria" (steakhouse), and then other people began to arrive. There was no donation of lands; the landowners created the lots themselves. The town name comes from a coconut tree, the indaiá, which grows nearby. Indiara belonged to three municipalities: [Edéia](/source/Ed%C3%A9ia), [Jandaia](/source/Jandaia), and [Palmeira de Goiás](/source/Palmeira_de_Goi%C3%A1s) and was dismembered to create a district and a municipality in 1983.
