# Inaba Masami

**Inaba Masami** (稲葉 正巳) was *[daimyō](/source/Daimy%C5%8D)* of [Tateyama Domain](/source/Tateyama_Domain) during late-[Edo period](/source/Edo_period) Japan.

## Biography

Inaba Masami was the eldest son of the previous *[daimyō](/source/Daimy%C5%8D)* of Tateyama Domain, [Inaba Masamori](/source/Inaba_Masamori). On his father's death in 1820, he succeeded to the head of the Tateyama Inaba clan and the position of *daimyō* of Tateyama. In 1862, he was appointed as a *[Wakadoshiyori](/source/Wakadoshiyori)* in the administration of the [Tokugawa shogunate](/source/Tokugawa_shogunate) under *[Shōgun](/source/Sh%C5%8Dgun)* [Tokugawa Iemochi](/source/Tokugawa_Iemochi). He resigned the title in 1864, with instructions to strengthen Japan's naval defenses against the increasing aggressive incursions of foreign [black ships](/source/Black_ships), and supported [Katsu Kaishū](/source/Katsu_Kaish%C5%AB)’s efforts to create the [Kobe Naval Training Center](/source/Kobe_Naval_Training_Center). He was reappointed as a *Wakadoshiyori* in 1865, and rose to the positions of *[Rōjū](/source/R%C5%8Dj%C5%AB)*, Commissioner of the Army and Fleet Admiral of the Tokugawa Navy under *Shōgun* [Tokugawa Yoshinobu](/source/Tokugawa_Yoshinobu). He held these posts until 1868. However, with the start of the [Boshin War](/source/Boshin_War), he refused to take an active role against the [Satchō Alliance](/source/Satch%C5%8D_Alliance) and went into retirement at [Tateyama Castle](/source/Tateyama_Castle), turning the domain over to his son [Inaba Masayoshi](/source/Inaba_Masayoshi). He died in 1879.

Inaba Masami was married to a daughter of [Suwa Tadamichi](/source/Suwa_Tadamichi), *daimyō* of [Suwa Domain](/source/Suwa_Domain) in [Shinano Province](/source/Shinano_Province).
