Mari

Location of Mari

**Iku-Shamagan** (𒄿𒆪𒀭𒊭𒈠𒃶, *i-ku-[D](/source/Dingir)[sha-ma-gan](/source/%C5%A0umugan),* fl. c. 2500 BC)[3][4] was a King of the second [Mariote](/source/Mari%2C_Syria#The_second_kingdom) kingdom. He is one of three Mari kings known from archaeology, [Ikun-Shamash](/source/Ikun-Shamash) probably being the oldest one.[5] Another king was [Ishqi-Mari](/source/Ishqi-Mari), also known from an inscribed statue.[6][7][8]

In their inscriptions, these Mari kings used the [Akkadian language](/source/Akkadian_language), whereas their contemporaries to the south used the [Sumerian language](/source/Sumerian_language).[5]

## Vase

A vase mentioning Iku-Shamagan "in an early semitic dialect" is also known:[9][10]

"For Iku-Shamagan, king of Mari, Shuweda the cup-bearer, son of ... the merchant, dedicated this vessel to the river god and [Ishtarat](/source/Ishtarat)"

— Vessel inscription.[10][3]

## Statue

Iku-Shamagan is known from a statue with inscription, discovered by [André Parrot](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Parrot) in 1952.[5][11][12] The statue, in the [National Museum of Damascus](/source/National_Museum_of_Damascus), was restored by the [Louvre Museum](/source/Louvre_Museum) in 2011.[13]

Iku-Shamagan's votive statue was dedicated through an inscription on the back of the statue:[13]

𒄿𒆪𒀭𒊭𒈠𒃶 / 𒈗𒈠𒌷𒆠 / 𒀋 / 𒊕𒂅 / 𒊨𒋤 / 𒀭𒈹𒍝𒍝 / 𒊕𒄸𒁺

"Of Iku-Shamagan, king of Mari, his surveyor has dedicated the statue to Ninni-zaza"

— Inscription on the statue of Iku-Shamagan[4][14]

The statue was discovered in Mari, in the Temple Ninni-zaza.[13]

The statue was heavily damaged during the conquest by the armies of the [Akkad](/source/Akkadian_Empire) around 2300 BC.[13][15]
