# Ignatius Gronkowski

**Ignatius J. Gronkowski**[1] (March 28, 1897 – September 22, 1981)[2] was an American professional [cyclist](/source/Cycle_sport). He held five world records for the 1/2-, 3/4-, 1.5-, and 2-mile distances.[3]

Gronkowski was born and raised in [Buffalo, New York](/source/Buffalo,_New_York). He attended school at [St. Stanislaus](/source/Church_of_St._Stanislaus,_Bishop_and_Martyr_(Buffalo,_New_York)).[4]

He represented the [United States at the 1924 Summer Olympics](/source/United_States_at_the_1924_Summer_Olympics) in [Paris](/source/Paris).[5] Gronkowski was reluctant to travel to Paris and leave his wife and baby with the little money that he had saved. However, that June, his coworkers at the [American Radiator Company](/source/American_Radiator_Company) plant presented him with $582.70 (), enabling him to make the trip.[4] The American team performed worse than expected at the Olympics at least in part because they had to use French bicycles to which they were not accustomed.[1]

Gronkowski did not participate in the [1928 Summer Olympics](/source/Cycling_at_the_1928_Summer_Olympics) because there was no qualifying event held in the United States.[1]

After his racing career ended, he promoted the sport while working as a [taxi](/source/Taxi) driver.[1]

His great-grandsons include [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) players [Rob](/source/Rob_Gronkowski), [Dan](/source/Dan_Gronkowski), [Chris](/source/Chris_Gronkowski) and [Glenn Gronkowski](/source/Glenn_Gronkowski).[6]
