**Icelandic New Energy Ltd** (*Íslensk NýOrka ehf*) is a company founded in 1999 following a decision in 1998 by the [Icelandic Parliament](/source/Al%C3%BEing) to convert vehicles and fishing fleets to hydrogen produced from [renewable energy](/source/Renewable_energy)[1] by 2050.

Icelandic New Energy was formed as a spin-off from the research by the [University of Iceland](/source/University_of_Iceland) and was initially 51% owned by [Vistorka](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Vistorka&action=edit&redlink=1), with the remainder owned by [Daimler](/source/Daimler_AG), [Norsk Hydro](/source/Norsk_Hydro) and [Shell Hydrogen](/source/Shell_Hydrogen).[2] VistOrka was owned by [The Icelandic New Business Venture Fund](/source/The_Icelandic_New_Business_Venture_Fund) (Nýsköpunarsjóður), the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the national power company [Landsvirkjun](/source/Landsvirkjun), [Orkuveita Reykjavíkur](/source/Orkuveita_Reykjav%C3%ADkur) (Reykjavík Energy), Hitaveita Suðurnesja, the [Technological Institute of Iceland](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Technological_Institute_of_Iceland&action=edit&redlink=1), The Fertilizer Plant (Áburðarverksmiðjan), the [University of Iceland](/source/University_of_Iceland) and Reykjavik Resources.[3]

As of 2024, shareholders include [Landsvirkjun](/source/Landsvirkjun), [Reykjavík Energy](/source/Reykjav%C3%ADk_Energy), [HS Orka](/source/HS_Orka), and the [Government of Iceland](/source/Government_of_Iceland).

Together with [SEV](/source/SEV_(company)), and the authorities in the Faroe Islands and [Greenland](/source/Greenland), Icelandic New Energy established the [North Atlantic Hydrogen Association](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=North_Atlantic_Hydrogen_Association&action=edit&redlink=1) (NAHA) to investigate [hydrogen technology](/source/Hydrogen_technology).[4] NAHA has been largely inactive since 2020.

In its early years, INE promoted the use of [hydrogen fuel](/source/Hydrogen_fuel) in [Iceland](/source/Iceland) but broadened its scope in 2008 to include other alternative, low- and zero-emission fuels for transport.

Along with partners [Hydrogen Denmark](https://brintbranchen.dk/en/) [Hydrogen Sweden](https://vatgas.se/en/) [Norwegian Hydrogen Forum](https://www.hydrogen.no/en) and [VTT Finland](https://www.vttresearch.com/fi), INE was also a founding member of the Nordic Hydrogen Partnership (formerly the Scandinavian Hydrogen Highway Partnership (SHHP)) through which it collaborates on a regular basis.

Since its foundation, Icelandic New Energy has managed numerous local, Nordic and EU demonstration projects. INE also engages in energy transition consultancy, educational seminars, and other activities.
