# Ian Whates

**Ian Whates** is a British [speculative fiction](/source/Speculative_fiction) author and editor. In 2006 he launched the independent [publishing house](/source/Publishing) NewCon Press. He lives with his partner Helen in Cambridgeshire.

As of 2009 Whates is currently a director of both the [Science Fiction Writers of America](/source/Science_Fiction_Writers_of_America) (SFWA)[1] and the [British Science Fiction Association](/source/British_Science_Fiction_Association) (BSFA).[2] He has had short fiction published in *[Nature](/source/Nature_(magazine))*, *Hub* and *TQR*. In 2007 his short story [The Gift of Joy](/source/The_Gift_of_Joy) was nominated for the [British Science Fiction Award](/source/BSFA_Awards).[3] His [space opera](/source/Space_opera) novel, Pelquin's Comet (The Dark Angels Book 1), was published in 2015.
