Born in Blackhill, [Consett](/source/Consett), [County Durham](/source/County_Durham), Towers started his career with [Burnley](/source/Burnley_F.C.) joining the club as a schoolboy before signing professional terms with the club in October 1957.<ref name="Ian Towers 1940 - 2015">{{cite news
