# Ian Samuel

**Adrian Christopher Ian Samuel** (20 August 1915 – 26 December 2010) was a Royal Air Force pilot, British diplomat, and director of chemical and [agrochemical](/source/Agrochemical) trade associations.

## Career

Ian Samuel was educated at [Rugby School](/source/Rugby_School) and [St John's College, Oxford](/source/St_John's_College,_Oxford). He joined the [Diplomatic Service](/source/Her_Majesty's_Diplomatic_Service) in 1938 and served brief postings in [Beirut](/source/Beirut), [Tunis](/source/Tunis) and [Trieste](/source/Trieste) before volunteering for the [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force) in 1940. He served in [206 Squadron](/source/No._206_Squadron_RAF) of [Coastal Command](/source/Coastal_Command), and was pilot of a [Flying Fortress](/source/Boeing_B-17_Flying_Fortress) that sank [German submarine *U-169*](/source/German_submarine_U-169) in March 1943.[1]

After the war Samuel returned to the Diplomatic Service with postings at [Ankara](/source/Ankara), [Cairo](/source/Cairo) and [Damascus](/source/Damascus). From 1959 to 1963 he was [Principal Private Secretary](/source/Principal_Private_Secretary_to_the_Secretary_of_State_for_Foreign_Affairs) to the [Foreign Secretary](/source/Secretary_of_State_for_Foreign_Affairs_(UK)), [Selwyn Lloyd](/source/Selwyn_Lloyd), then briefly to [Sir Alec Douglas-Home](/source/Alec_Douglas-Home). In late 1963 he was appointed [minister](/source/Diplomatic_rank) (second to the Ambassador) at [Madrid](/source/Madrid). He left the Diplomatic Service in 1965 and was director of the British Chemical Engineering Contractors Association 1966–69 and of the British Agrochemicals Association 1972–78, then director-general of *Groupement International des Associations Nationales de Fabricants de Produits Agrochimiques* (GIFAP, now [CropLife International](/source/CropLife_International)) 1978–79.

Samuel was appointed CMG in the [Queen's Birthday Honours](/source/Queen's_Birthday_Honours) of 1959[2] and CVO in the [New Year Honours](/source/New_Year_Honours) of 1963.[3]
