**ISO 3166-2:MX** is the entry for [Mexico](/source/Mexico) in [ISO 3166-2](/source/ISO_3166-2), part of the [ISO 3166](/source/ISO_3166) [standard](/source/Standardization) published by the [International Organization for Standardization](/source/International_Organization_for_Standardization) (ISO), which defines [codes](/source/Code) for the names of the principal [subdivisions](/source/Country_subdivision) (e.g., [provinces](/source/Province) or [states](/source/State_(administrative_division))) of all [countries](/source/Country) coded in [ISO 3166-1](/source/ISO_3166-1).

Currently for Mexico, ISO 3166-2 codes are defined for federative entities including 31 [states](/source/List_of_states_of_Mexico) and [Mexico City](/source/Mexico_City). Since an [amendment](/source/Constitutional_amendment) of the [Constitution of Mexico](/source/Constitution_of_Mexico) in 2016, [Mexico City](/source/Mexico_City), the country's [capital city](/source/Capital_city), has been granted special status equal to a state.

Each code consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen. The first part is MX, the [ISO 3166-1 alpha-2](/source/ISO_3166-1_alpha-2) code of Mexico. The second part is three letters.
