''Varuna'' was completed in April 1981 by [Mazagon Dock Limited](/source/Mazagon_Dock_Limited) at Mumbai. It based at [Kochi](/source/Kochi) under the [Southern Naval Command](/source/Southern_Naval_Command). ==Service history==

INS Varuna has made several [goodwill visit](/source/goodwill_visit) to various countries including [Australia](/source/Australia) to participate in its [bicentennial](/source/Australian_Bicentenary) celebrations in January 1988, where it participated in "Tall Ship" [race](/source/racing) from [Hobart](/source/Hobart) to [Sydney](/source/Sydney) where 250 square-rigged ships were participant.<ref>{{cite book|title=Transition to Eminence: The Indian Navy 1976-1990|isbn = 9788170622666|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1WxI9TlAxIQC|last1 = Hiranandani|first1 = G.
