# IListen

**iListen**, developed by [MacSpeech](/source/MacSpeech), is a [speech recognition](/source/Speech_recognition) program for the [Apple Macintosh](/source/Apple_Macintosh). In 2006, iListen was the only [third-party software](/source/Third-party_developer) that allowed inputting text using one's voice that works on newer Macintosh models. Its competitors were [Apple](/source/Apple_Inc.)'s own [speech recognition](/source/Speech_recognition) software (built into [Mac OS X](/source/Mac_OS_X)); [Dragon Naturally Speaking](/source/Dragon_Naturally_Speaking) by [Nuance](/source/Nuance_Communications), running under [Windows](/source/Microsoft_Windows) [virtualization software](/source/Virtual_machine) such as [Parallels Desktop for Mac](/source/Parallels_Desktop_for_Mac) or [VMware Fusion](/source/VMware_Fusion); and the discontinued [speech recognition](/source/Speech_recognition) program [ViaVoice](/source/ViaVoice) by Nuance/[IBM](/source/IBM).

In January 2008, iListen was discontinued by MacSpeech, and was replaced by its new speech recognition program, "Dictate" (released February 15, 2008). "Dictate" uses the same speech-recognition engine as Dragon NaturallySpeaking, having licensed it from Nuance. iListen's speech recognition engine was based on software developed by [Philips](/source/Philips).
