# Hyram Marks

**Hyram A. Marks** (8 June 1872 – 17 August 1957) was a [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player who represented [Australia](/source/Australia).

Marks, a [lock](/source/Lock_(rugby_union)), was born in [Sydney, NSW](/source/Sydney,_NSW) and attended [Sydney Grammar School](/source/Sydney_Grammar_School) and [Sydney University](/source/Sydney_University). He claimed two international rugby caps for Australia and was the [University rugby club](/source/Sydney_University_Football_Club)'s first Wallaby representative.[2] His Test debut was against Great Britain, at Sydney, on 24 June 1899, the inaugural rugby Test match played by an [Australian national representative](/source/Australia_national_rugby_union_team) side.

Due to funding constraints he was one of only six [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales_Waratahs) players ([Charlie Ellis](/source/Charlie_Ellis), [Bob McCowan](/source/Bob_McCowan), [Lonnie Spragg](/source/Lonnie_Spragg), [Peter Ward](/source/Peter_Ward_(rugby)) & [Robert Challoner](/source/Robert_Challoner)) selected to make the trip to Brisbane four weeks later for the second Test.[3] His performance in that match was noted as "excellent" by the press.[4]
