== Early life ==

Hutch Harris was born in New York City on October 5, 1975. His family moved to [San Jose, California](/source/San_Jose%2C_California) in 1983.  Harris met [Kathy Foster](/source/Kathy_Foster_(musician)) after graduating from Prospect High School in 1993. == Musical career ==

Harris wrote and recorded the first Thermals record, ''[More Parts per Million](/source/More_Parts_per_Million)'', in the kitchen of his one-bedroom house in Southeast Portland in early 2002. [Sub Pop Records](/source/Sub_Pop_Records) heard the recording via [Ben Gibbard](/source/Ben_Gibbard) of [Death Cab For Cutie](/source/Death_Cab_For_Cutie) and [The Postal Service](/source/The_Postal_Service), and signed The Thermals to a three-record contract when the band was less than six months old.<ref>{{Cite web | url=http://www.subpop.com/artists/the_thermals | title=The Thermals }}</ref> The Thermals released 7 studio albums between 2003 and 2016 before announcing their split in 2018.<ref>{{Cite web | url=http://www.thethermals.com/bio/ | title=Bio | date=May 11, 2012 }}</ref>
