The **Huron Subdivision** or **Huron Sub** is a [railway](/source/Railway) line owned and operated by the [Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad](/source/Rapid_City,_Pierre_and_Eastern_Railroad) (RCPE), a subsidiary of [Genesee & Wyoming](/source/Genesee_%26_Wyoming). The line stretches for 136 miles (219 km) across southwestern [Minnesota](/source/Minnesota) and southeastern [South Dakota](/source/South_Dakota), forming the eastern end of the RCPE shortline network. Originally the line was a part of the [Chicago and North Western Railway](/source/Chicago_and_North_Western_Railway). From 1986 it was a part of [Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad](/source/Dakota,_Minnesota_and_Eastern_Railroad), which later became a subsidiary of [Canadian Pacific Railway](/source/Canadian_Pacific_Railway).

The line is [dark territory](/source/Dark_territory), meaning that it is not signalled and not equipped with [centralized traffic control](/source/Centralized_traffic_control) or [automatic block signalling](/source/Automatic_block_signalling) systems. The line is dispatched via radio using [track warrant control](/source/Track_warrant).

Huron Subdivision connects with Canadian Pacific [Tracy Subdivision](/source/Tracy_Subdivision) at [Tracy](/source/Tracy,_Minnesota), [Minnesota](/source/Minnesota), as well as [Pierre Subdivision](/source/Pierre_Subdivision) and [Yale Spur Subdivision](/source/DME_Yale_Spur_Subdivision) (a former [Great Northern Railway](/source/Great_Northern_Railway_(U.S.)) line) at [Huron](/source/Huron,_South_Dakota), [South Dakota](/source/South_Dakota).

RCPE trains may continue to [Mankato](/source/Mankato) using trackage rights to interchange with the [Union Pacific Railroad](/source/Union_Pacific_Railroad).

## History

The Huron Subdivision is a direct descendant of the railroad line featured in the four [De Smet](/source/De_Smet,_South_Dakota) novels within the overall series of children's novels written by [Laura Ingalls Wilder](/source/Laura_Ingalls_Wilder) known as the *[Little House on the Prairie](/source/Little_House_on_the_Prairie)* series. The line was built in 1879-1880 and first operated in the 1880s, and the new railroad line's construction and operation are repeatedly described and featured in the novels.
