**Hungen** (German pronunciation: [\[ˈhʊŋən\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Standard_German) [ⓘ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:De-Hungen.ogg)) is a town in the [district of Gießen](/source/Gie%C3%9Fen_(district)), in [Hesse](/source/Hesse), [Germany](/source/Germany). It is situated 20 km southeast of [Gießen](/source/Gie%C3%9Fen), and 18 km northeast of [Friedberg](/source/Friedberg%2C_Hesse). Surrounding towns are [Laubach](/source/Laubach) to the north, [Nidda](/source/Nidda%2C_Hesse) to the east, [Wölfersheim](/source/W%C3%B6lfersheim) to the south, and [Münzenberg](/source/M%C3%BCnzenberg) and [Lich](/source/Lich%2C_Hesse) to the west.

The history of Hungen dates back to 782. In 1806 it came under the sovereignty of the [Grand Duchy of Hesse](/source/Grand_Duchy_of_Hesse).

Buildings of interest include the Hungen Castle, the Evangelical Church, parts of the medieval city wall and [Hungen station](/source/Hungen_station).

## Looted books depository

At the end of [World War II](/source/World_War_II) American forces discovered almost 1.2 million looted books and prints at Hungen, among them the contents of the Rothschild Library at Frankfurt, which had been removed by the Nazis from Frankfurt because of Allied bombing raids.[3][4]
