**Hundorp**[3] is the [administrative centre](/source/Administrative_centre) of [Sør-Fron Municipality](/source/S%C3%B8r-Fron_Municipality) in [Innlandet](/source/Innlandet) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). The village is located in the [Gudbrandsdal](/source/Gudbrandsdal) valley along the north shore of the [Gudbrandsdalslågen](/source/Gudbrandsdalsl%C3%A5gen) river, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the village of [Ringebu](/source/Ringebu_(village)). The [European route E6](/source/European_route_E6) highway and the [Dovrebanen](/source/Dovrebanen) railway line both pass through the village. The 0.84-square-kilometre (210-acre) village has a population (2024) of 584 and a [population density](/source/Population_density) of 695 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,800/sq mi).[1][4]

Hundorp was also the centre of the [petty kingdom of Gudbrandsdalen](/source/Petty_kingdoms_of_Norway#Kingdom_of_Gudbrandsdalen) and as such, it was an important place for religion and politics. [Dale-Gudbrand's farm](/source/Dale-Gudbrand's_farm), the farm once populated by the ancient ruler [Dale-Gudbrand](/source/Dale-Gudbrand), was chosen as the [millennium site](/source/Millennium_site) of [Oppland](/source/Oppland) county.

## Name

The village is named after the old Hundorp farm ([Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse_language): *Hundþorp*). The first element is *[hundr](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hundr#Old_Norse)* which means 'dog' or 'hound'. The last element is *[þorp](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%C3%BEorp#Old_Norse)* which means 'village'. The name is probably reflecting the fact that at one time this was a village of dog-breeding.
