Hills in Canterbury Region, New Zealand

The **Hundalee Hills** are located close to the borders of [Hurunui District](/source/Hurunui_District) and [Kaikōura District](/source/Kaik%C5%8Dura_District) in [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury%2C_New_Zealand) in the [South Island](/source/South_Island) of New Zealand.

Located 40 kilometres (24.85 mi) to the south of [Kaikōura](/source/Kaik%C5%8Dura), Hundalee Hills are known largely for a notorious stretch of [State Highway 1](/source/New_Zealand_State_Highway_1) between [Kaikōura](/source/Kaik%C5%8Dura) and [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] The road winds sharply around the edge of several hills, as does the [Conway River](/source/Conway_River_(New_Zealand)), which reaches the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean) close to the Hundalees.

Within the Hundalee Hills is the rural locality of [Hundalee](/source/Hundalee). This was briefly a terminus of the [Main North Line](/source/Main_North_Line%2C_New_Zealand) [railway](/source/Railway) that winds its way through the Hundalee Hills,[1] and it was also the home of [World War II](/source/World_War_II) hero [Charles Upham](/source/Charles_Upham) after he returned from combat.[2]
