Hundalee 7384, New Zealand

Hundalee

**Hundalee** is a rural locality in the [Hurunui District](/source/Hurunui_District) of the [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury%2C_New_Zealand) region of New Zealand's [South Island](/source/South_Island). It straddles the [Conway River](/source/Conway_River%2C_New_Zealand), the traditional boundary between Canterbury and [Marlborough](/source/Marlborough_Region) and is in the [Hundalee Hills](/source/Hundalee_Hills).[1]

Although once a [railway](/source/Railway) terminus, Hundalee today does not have a defined township as such; the place name refers to the rural properties in the area. One of these properties became the home of [World War II](/source/World_War_II) hero [Charles Upham](/source/Charles_Upham) after he returned from combat.

The railway line was opened to Hundalee from [Parnassus](/source/Parnassus%2C_New_Zealand) in 1939 as work on the [Main North Line](/source/Main_North_Line%2C_New_Zealand) from [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch) crept north to meet a line being built southwards from [Wharanui](/source/Wharanui). In 1945, the full line was completed when the two ends met in [Kaikōura](/source/Kaik%C5%8Dura). The railway still runs through Hundalee, but the [TranzCoastal](/source/TranzCoastal) express passenger [train](/source/Train) does not stop. [State Highway 1](/source/New_Zealand_State_Highway_1) also passes through Hundalee.
