The **Hume** is an [economic](/source/Economic_geography) [rural region](/source/Regions_of_Victoria)[2] located in the north-eastern part of [Victoria](/source/Victoria_(Australia)), [Australia](/source/Australia).[3] Comprising an area in excess of 40,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi) with a population that has grown from 263,000 (in 2011) to 309,684 (in 2021), the Hume region includes the [local government areas](/source/Local_government_in_Australia) of [Alpine Shire](/source/Alpine_Shire), [Rural City of Benalla](/source/Rural_City_of_Benalla), [City of Wodonga](/source/City_of_Wodonga), [City of Greater Shepparton](/source/City_of_Greater_Shepparton), [Shire of Indigo](/source/Shire_of_Indigo), [Shire of Mansfield](/source/Shire_of_Mansfield), [Shire of Strathbogie](/source/Shire_of_Strathbogie), [Shire of Towong](/source/Shire_of_Towong) and the [Rural City of Wangaratta](/source/Rural_City_of_Wangaratta), and also includes five [unincorporated areas](/source/Unincorporated_area) encompassing the alpine ski resorts in the region.

The Hume region is located along the two major interstate transport corridors – the [Hume](/source/Hume_Highway#Victoria) corridor and the [Goulburn Valley](/source/Goulburn_Valley_Highway) corridor. The region comprises four distinct and inter-connected sub-regions or districts: Upper Hume, Central Hume, [Goulburn Valley](/source/Goulburn_Valley), and Lower Hume. The regional cities and centres of [Wodonga](/source/Wodonga%2C_Victoria), [Shepparton](/source/Shepparton) and [Wangaratta](/source/Wangaratta%2C_Victoria) (supported by [Benalla](/source/Benalla%2C_Victoria)) function as a network of regional hubs that service their own distinct sub-regions. The region is bounded by the [Victorian Alps](/source/Victorian_Alps) in the south and east, the [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales) border defined by the [Murray River](/source/Murray_River) in the north, the Loddon [Mallee](/source/Mallee_(Victoria)) region in the west and the [Greater Melbourne](/source/Melbourne) northern, western, and eastern metropolitan and [Gippsland](/source/Gippsland) regions to the south.[4]

### Political representation

For the purposes of [Australian federal elections](/source/Elections_in_Australia) for the [House of Representatives](/source/Australian_House_of_Representatives), the Hume region is contained within all or part of the electoral divisions of [Bendigo](/source/Division_of_Bendigo),[5] [Indi](/source/Division_of_Indi),[6] [McEwen](/source/Division_of_McEwen),[7] and [Nicholls](/source/Division_of_Nicholls).[8]

For the purposes of Victorian elections for the [Legislative Assembly](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Victoria), the Hume region is contained within all or part of the electoral districts of [Benambra](/source/Electoral_district_of_Benambra), [Eildon](/source/Electoral_district_of_Eildon), [Euroa](/source/Electoral_district_of_Euroa), [Kalkallo](/source/Electoral_district_of_Kalkallo), [Ovens Valley](/source/Electoral_district_of_Ovens_Valley), [Shepparton](/source/Electoral_district_of_Shepparton) and [Yan Yean](/source/Electoral_district_of_Yan_Yean).
