**Humbe** is a town and [commune](/source/Communes_of_Angola) in the municipality of [Ombadja](/source/Ombadja), province of [Cunene](/source/Cunene_Province), Angola.

It also used to be the location of a [Roman Catholic](/source/Roman_Catholic) [mission station](/source/Mission_station) in southern [Angola](/source/Angola), located approx. 10 [km](/source/Kilometre) northeast of [Xangongo](/source/Xangongo), in the tribal area of the [Ombadja](/source/Ombadja) tribe of the [Ovambos](/source/Owambo_people). It was located on a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Kunene River](/source/Kunene_River), flowing into this river from the north.

Humbe was established in ca. 1882, after the Catholics had made a failed attempt to establish themselves near the [Finnish](/source/Finnish_Missionary_Society) mission station of [Olukonda](/source/Olukonda) in [Ondonga](/source/Ondonga), [Ovamboland](/source/Ovamboland), in 1879, and then in [Omaruru](/source/Omaruru%2C_Namibia), [Hereroland](/source/Hereroland), further south in [South West Africa](/source/South_West_Africa) in 1882.[1]

The attempts of the [Portuguese](/source/Portugal) to subjugate the Ovambos of Ombadja and [Oukwanyama](/source/Oukwanyama) were initially unsuccessful, and 1904 they suffered a massive defeat [at the Cunene river](/source/Battle_of_the_Cunene). In response, the Portuguese established [Forte Roçadas](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Forte_Ro%C3%A7adas&action=edit&redlink=1) in 1906 in what is now [Xangongo](/source/Xangongo), not far from Humbe.[2]
