The **Humanist Union** ([German](/source/German_language): *Humanistische Union*, **HU**) is a German [civil rights](/source/Civil_rights) organization. Their targets include the enforcement of [freedom of information](/source/Freedom_of_information), [direct democracy](/source/Direct_democracy) and the abolition of the [Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution](/source/Federal_Office_for_the_Protection_of_the_Constitution). Part of its program are the [separation of church and state](/source/Separation_of_church_and_state); it takes a critical stance on constitutional privileges granted to philosophical and religious organizations and against [religious education](/source/Religious_education). The [Humanist](/source/Humanism) Union was founded in 1961 in [Munich](/source/Munich)[1] and is the oldest existing civil rights organization in the [Federal Republic of Germany](/source/Germany).
