Taraval was born in Paris, the son of the French painter [Guillaume Taraval](/source/Guillaume_Taraval), who moved his family to [Stockholm](/source/Stockholm) in 1732 to work on the decoration of the new [Royal Palace](/source/Stockholm_Palace). Initially a pupil of his father, Hugues returned to Paris after his father's death in 1750.<ref name=Lee/> There he studied with [Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre](/source/Jean-Baptiste_Marie_Pierre) and [Charles-André van Loo](/source/Charles-Andr%C3%A9_van_Loo).

In 1756, he won the [Prix de Rome](/source/Prix_de_Rome) with ''[Job](/source/Job_(biblical_figure)) Mocked by his Wife'', now in the [Musée des beaux-arts de Marseille](/source/Mus%C3%A9e_des_beaux-arts_de_Marseille). In [Rome](/source/Rome) he was a pupil of [Charles-Joseph Natoire](/source/Charles-Joseph_Natoire) at the [Académie française](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_fran%C3%A7aise).

Admitted to the [Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_royale_de_peinture_et_de_sculpture) (Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture) in Paris in 1765, he was received there in 1769. His reception piece is a ''Triumph of Bacchus'', one of the elements of the ceiling of the [Galerie d'Apollon](/source/Galerie_d'Apollon) in the [Louvre](/source/Louvre). As a painter and decorator he worked at the [Château de Bellevue, France](/source/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Bellevue%2C_France) in [Meudon](/source/Meudon) (1767), the [École Militaire](/source/%C3%89cole_Militaire) (Military School) of Paris (1773), the [Collège de France](/source/Coll%C3%A8ge_de_France) (1777), the [Château de Marly](/source/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Marly) (1781), and the [Palace of Fontainebleau](/source/Palace_of_Fontainebleau) (1781).

Hugues Taraval died in Paris.<ref name=Lee/>
