**Hugo Miguel da Encarnação Pires Faria** (born 15 February 1983) is a Portuguese former [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [midfielder](/source/Midfielder).

## Club career

Born in [São Brás de Alportel](/source/S%C3%A3o_Br%C3%A1s_de_Alportel), [Faro District](/source/Faro_(Portuguese_district)), Faria played youth football for three clubs, including [FC Porto](/source/FC_Porto) from ages 16 to 18. He started his senior career with [Louletano DC](/source/Louletano_D.C.), with which he spent three seasons in the [third division](/source/Segunda_Divis%C3%A3o).[1][2]

Faria moved straight to the [Primeira Liga](/source/Primeira_Liga) in the summer of 2004, signing with [U.D. Leiria](/source/U.D._Leiria). He made his debut as a professional on 7 November, coming on as a late [substitute](/source/Substitute_(association_football)) in a 1–0 away win against [Académica de Coimbra](/source/Acad%C3%A9mica_de_Coimbra_(football));[3] it would be the first of only two league appearances during [the season](/source/2004%E2%80%9305_Primeira_Liga).[4]

From [2008](/source/2008%E2%80%9309_Cypriot_First_Division) to [2013](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Cypriot_First_Division), Faria competed in the [Cypriot First Division](/source/Cypriot_First_Division), always with [Enosis Neon Paralimni FC](/source/Enosis_Neon_Paralimni_FC). For [the following campaign](/source/2013%E2%80%9314_Super_League_Greece) he joined [AEL Kalloni FC](/source/AEL_Kalloni_F.C.), starting in 19 games to help his team to finish 12th in the [Super League Greece](/source/Super_League_Greece).[5]

Faria split 2014–15 with [Valletta F.C.](/source/Valletta_F.C.) from Malta and [Apollon Smyrnis F.C.](/source/Apollon_Smyrnis_F.C.) in the [Greek second division](/source/Football_League_Greece).[5] He signed for [Livingston](/source/Livingston_F.C.) on 19 August 2015, agreeing to a five-month contract after a successful trial.[6] His maiden appearance in the [Scottish Championship](/source/Scottish_Championship) took place only three days later, as he played the full 90 minutes and was [booked](/source/Penalty_card#Yellow_card) in a 1–2 home defeat to [Falkirk](/source/Falkirk_F.C.).[7]

Faria left Livingston in January 2016,[8] and signed for [Airdrieonians](/source/Airdrieonians_F.C.) also in the country shortly after.[9] He was suspended by the latter in October pending investigation of an accusation of [bullying](/source/Bullying) made against him,[10] leaving two months later in order to return to Portugal.[11]

On 8 November 2018, immediately after retiring following a spell in the [Portuguese third tier](/source/Campeonato_de_Portugal_(league)) with Louletano, the 35-year-old Faria was appointed first-team coach at English [Premier League](/source/Premier_League) club [AFC Bournemouth](/source/AFC_Bournemouth).[12]

## International career

Faria represented [Portugal at under-20 level](/source/Portugal_national_under-20_football_team), earning his first [cap](/source/Cap_(sport)) on 5 February 2003 in a 5–2 [friendly](/source/Exhibition_game#International_football) victory over the [Czech Republic](/source/Czech_Republic_national_under-20_football_team) in [Elvas](/source/Elvas).[13] He represented the country in the 2004 edition of the [Toulon Tournament](/source/Toulon_Tournament), scoring an [own goal](/source/Own_goal) in a 1–0 group stage defeat against [Sweden](/source/Sweden_national_under-20_football_team).[14]
