# Hugo Costa

**Hugo Alexandre Esteves Costa** (born 4 November 1973) is a Portuguese former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [central defender](/source/Central_defender).

## Club career

Costa was born in [Tramagal](/source/Tramagal), [Santarém District](/source/Santar%C3%A9m_District). A graduate of [S.L. Benfica](/source/S.L._Benfica)'s youth system, he never appeared however for its first team, going on to spend the following four seasons in the [Primeira Liga](/source/Primeira_Liga) with [Gil Vicente FC](/source/Gil_Vicente_F.C.), [S.C. Beira-Mar](/source/S.C._Beira-Mar) and [C.F. Estrela da Amadora](/source/C.F._Estrela_da_Amadora_(1932)), being relegated with the second club in [1994–95](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_Primeira_Liga).[2]

In summer 1996, Costa signed with [Stoke City](/source/Stoke_City_F.C.) of the English [Football League Second Division](/source/Football_League_Second_Division).[3] He left the Potters after only a couple of weeks and games,[4] returning to his country with [F.C. Alverca](/source/F.C._Alverca) and remaining five seasons with the [Lisbon](/source/Lisbon) outskirts side, three spent in the top flight.[5][6]

From [2001](/source/2001%E2%80%9302_Primeira_Liga) to [2003](/source/2002%E2%80%9303_Primeira_Liga), also as first choice and in the main division, Costa played with [Vitória de Setúbal](/source/Vit%C3%B3ria_F.C.).[7] Subsequently, he joined Germany's [Rot-Weiß Oberhausen](/source/Rot-Wei%C3%9F_Oberhausen) ([2. Bundesliga](/source/2._Bundesliga)),[8] staying two years in the country and [suffering relegation in his second](/source/2004%E2%80%9305_2._Bundesliga).[9]

Costa returned to Portugal midway through the [2005–06 campaign](/source/2005%E2%80%9306_Primeira_Liga) and signed a six-month contract with [U.D. Leiria](/source/U.D._Leiria),[10] playing only 16 matches in the top tier over a three-year spell; 12 of those came in [2007–08](/source/2007%E2%80%9308_Primeira_Liga), with the team ranking 16th and last.[11] Afterwards, the 34-year-old moved to [Cyprus](/source/Cyprus) with [Atromitos Yeroskipou](/source/Atromitos_Yeroskipou).[2]

One year later, Costa once again returned to his homeland, agreeing to a deal at lowly [C.D. Pinhalnovense](/source/C.D._Pinhalnovense). He left in 2011 aged nearly 38 and retired shortly after, subsequently working as a [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) in amateur football.[2]
