# Hugh Howie

**Hugh Howie** (14 February 1924 – 14 January 1958) was a Scottish [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played for Newton Juniors, [Hibernian](/source/Hibernian_F.C.) and the [Scotland national team](/source/Scotland_national_football_team).

Howie, born in [Glasgow](/source/Glasgow), was a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)) and joined Hibernian from Newton Juniors in 1943 and remained at [Easter Road](/source/Easter_Road) for the remainder of his career.[1] He was part of the Hibs team that won three [League Championships](/source/Scottish_football_champions) in [1947–48](/source/1947-48_in_Scottish_football), [1950–51](/source/1950-51_in_Scottish_football) and [1951–52](/source/1951-52_in_Scottish_football). He scored in his only Scotland [cap](/source/Cap_(sport)), a 3–1 win over [Wales](/source/Wales_national_football_team) in October 1948.

He was forced to retire from football in 1954 for medical reasons, having contracted [tuberculosis](/source/Tuberculosis).[2] He became a [journalist](/source/Journalist), but died in a [car accident](/source/Car_accident) in 1958.[2]
