Hub is an industrial city, and its original name was Hub Chowki because once[when?] there was a police and customs checkpost (which is known as a *chowki* in [Urdu](/source/Urdu)) named Nakahi.[citation needed] After the development of factories and many other industries, the town was renamed as Hub. It is one of the largest industrial centres of Balochistan, and because of its proximity to [Karachi](/source/Karachi), is becoming a [commuter town](/source/Commuter_town) of the Karachi metropolitan area. ## History Following the downfall of the Sultanate of Makran (mid-12th to early 14th century A.D.), the succeeding [Baloch](/source/Baloch_people) state of [Kalmat](/source/Principality_of_Kalmat) (which lasted from 14th to mid-16th century) flourished in the coastal region extending from Pasni southward, most probably as far as the [Hub river](/source/Hub_River).[2] ## Demographics ### Population Historical population Year Pop. ±% 1951 ... — 1961 ... — 1972 ... — 1981 4,249 — 1998 62,763 +1377.1% 2017 175,376 +179.4% 2023 195,661 +11.6% Sources:[3] According to [2023 census](/source/2023_Pakistani_census), Hub had a population of 195,661.[4] **Languages** The majority of the population is [Muslim](/source/Muslims), while there are small [Hindu](/source/Hindus) and [Christian](/source/Christians) minorities. Increased commercialization in this area has led to many social, political and hygienic problems. The worsening state of roads and streets in the area has made everyday life difficult. Roads are too busy as the area serves as a hub between [lasbela](/source/Lasbela) and [Karachi](/source/Karachi), that is one of the main reasons behind the lack of development in this area. ## Economy Hub is economically one of the largest industrial cities in [Balochistan](/source/Balochistan,_Pakistan). Hub is emerging as a commercial centre due to its proximity to [Karachi](/source/Karachi). The [Bazaars](/source/Bazaar) and [markets](/source/Marketplace) are full with varieties of goods as well. The [Byco Petroleum](/source/Cnergyico)'s (now [Cnergyico](/source/Cnergyico)) refineries,[5] [Cadbury](/source/Cadbury), [DG Cement](/source/DG_Cement), [Attock Cement](/source/Attock_Cement), [Ismail Industries Limited](/source/Ismail_Industries_Limited), [Hubco Power Project](/source/Hub_Power_Company), Bosicor Petrochemical Refineries (now [Cnergyico](/source/Cnergyico))[6] are located at Hub near Karachi. ## Education There are a number of primary (till class 5), secondary (till class 8) and high schools (till class 10/[SSC](/source/Secondary_School_Certificate)) in Hub, including an English Language Center, Government Degree College, private college and public library each.
