==History==
In the era of the [Spanish American wars of independence](/source/Spanish_American_wars_of_independence), Huanta remained loyal to the Spanish monarch [Ferdinand VII](/source/Ferdinand_VII_of_Spain) and the [viceroy of Peru](/source/viceroy_of_Peru) designated it the "Loyal and Invincible ''Villa'' of Huanta", a source of pride for the residents.<ref>''Monografía Histórico-Geográfica del Departamento de Ayacucho'', p. 181, quoted in Méndez, ''The Plebeian Republic'', pp. 33, 259, fn.8.</ref> Huanta and the province was the site of [a major rebellion (1825–28)](/source/Iquicha_War_of_1825%E2%80%931828) against the newly formed Peruvian state. The Huanta Rebellion, characterized as a monarchist rebellion, brought together different ethnic and occupational groups in complex interactions. The peasants of Huanta were originally monarchist rebels and were transformed into liberal [guerrillas](/source/guerrillas). Although the rebels were largely illiterate and considered passive and reactionary, recent research argues that they had a clear vision of national politics.<ref>Cecilia Méndez, ''The Plebeian Republic: The Huanta Rebellion and the Making of the Peruvian State, 1820-1850''. Durham: Duke University Press 2005.</ref> The Huanta rebellion was defeated militarily, but the local leaders did not suffer the severe repression that characterized earlier rebellions, most notably the [Rebellion of Túpac Amaru II](/source/Rebellion_of_T%C3%BApac_Amaru_II).<ref>Méndez, ''The Plebeian Republic'', pp. 234-35.</ref> Other conflicts in Huanta include the [Salt Tax Revolt](/source/Salt_Tax_Revolt_(Peru)) (1896–1897) and the {{ill|Huanta Rebellion|es|Rebelión de Huanta}} (1969).
