Benedictine priory in Suffolk, England

**Hoxne Priory** was a [Benedictine](/source/Benedictine) priory at [Hoxne](/source/Hoxne) in [Suffolk](/source/Suffolk), England.

It was founded as a religious house around the year 950, with a chapel at the [supposed site](/source/Haegelisdun) of the martyrdom of [Saint Edmund](/source/Edmund_the_Martyr), king of East Anglia. The chapel was given in 1101 to [Norwich Cathedral](/source/Norwich_Cathedral) by [Herbert de Losinga](/source/Herbert_de_Losinga), and the priory became dependent on the cathedral. It was rebuilt by 1130 by Maurice of Windsor and his wife Edigia, being completed in 1226.[1]

At the time of the [Dissolution of the Monasteries](/source/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries), [William Castleton](/source/William_Castleton), who would be the first [Dean of Norwich](/source/Dean_of_Norwich), disposed of the priory's property around 1538 to [Sir Richard Gresham](/source/Sir_Richard_Gresham).[2] The site of the priory is now occupied by the Abbey Farmhouse.[1]
