'''Howtown''' is a hamlet in [Cumbria](/source/Cumbria), England, situated at a small harbour on the east shore of [Ullswater](/source/Ullswater) in the [Lake District](/source/Lake_District). Howtown is about three and a half miles from [Pooley Bridge](/source/Pooley_Bridge) and is best reached by water. The [Ullswater 'Steamers'](/source/Ullswater_'Steamers') regularly stop there on their way from [Glenridding](/source/Glenridding) at the southern end of Ullswater to Pooley Bridge at the northern end of the lake.

The name Howtown means "farmstead on the hill". The place name is from the [Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse) word ''haugr'', meaning "hill" or "mound", and the [Old English](/source/Old_English) word ''tūn'', meaning "town".<ref>[http://www.english-lakes.com/howtown.html Ullswater Area]</ref><ref>[http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sw.rae/ Place Names in the Lake District] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080504230129/http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sw.rae/ |date=2008-05-04 }}</ref> It contains the [Howtown Hotel](/source/Howtown_Hotel), Outward Bound Centre and Waternook Lakeside Accommodation.
