He was nicknamed “Howie” by his family and "'''Spud'''" during his baseball career, the latter in reference to his childhood years hurling potatoes at the barn for practice with his brothers on their family’s western New York State potato farm.

Krist played his entire MLB career for the [St. Louis Cardinals](/source/St._Louis_Cardinals) of the [National League](/source/National_League_(baseball)), and was a member of their [1942](/source/1942_World_Series) and [1946](/source/1946_World_Series) [World Series](/source/World_Series) Championship teams.

His 10–0 record in 1941, his first full season, is the third-best undefeated season ever. He suffered numerous illnesses and injuries that affected his overall career, including influenza, a broken ankle, a broken back in a car accident, and a bullet wound while serving in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) for two years in [Europe](/source/European_theatre_of_World_War_II) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II).<ref>{{cite web |title=Baseball in Wartime – Howie Krist |url=http://baseballinwartime.com/player_biographies/krist_howie.htm |website=BaseballinWartime.com |access-date=February 9, 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/howie-krist/ |title=Howie Krist |first1=Gregory H. |last1=Wolf |website=sabr.org |publisher=[Society for American Baseball Research](/source/Society_for_American_Baseball_Research) |access-date=February 9, 2019}}</ref>
