The **Howick Island** is the southernmost and a now uninhabited [island](/source/Island) in the [Howick group](/source/Howick_Group_National_Park) that is part of the [Great Barrier Reef Marine Park](/source/Great_Barrier_Reef_Marine_Park) in [Far North Queensland](/source/Far_North_Queensland), Australia.

It fell within the territory of the [Ithu](/source/Ithu) people in pre-colonial times.

The island is located in the [Coral Sea](/source/Coral_Sea) and is situated about 100 kilometres (62 mi) south-east of [Cape Melville](/source/Cape_Melville). The area of the island is approximately 480 hectares (1,200 acres).[2]

## Etymology

The island group was named by Lieutenant Charles Jeffreys RN, captain of [HMS](/source/Her_Majesty's_Ship) *[Kangaroo](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=HMS_Kangaroo_(1818),&action=edit&redlink=1)*, in 1815, possibly after [Sir Charles Grey, Viscount Howick](/source/Charles_Grey%2C_1st_Earl_Grey), a soldier.[1]

[Ion Idriess](/source/Ion_Idriess)' first novel, *[Madman's Island](/source/Madman's_Island)*, was published in 1927 and is semi-[autobiographical](/source/Autobiography) based on the author's experiences on Howick Island.[4]
