**Howick County** was one of the 26 [counties of Western Australia](/source/Counties_of_Western_Australia) that were designated in 1829 as [cadastral divisions](/source/Lands_administrative_divisions_of_Western_Australia). It was named after [Viscount Howick](/source/Henry_Grey,_3rd_Earl_Grey), a well-connected [Whig](/source/British_Whig_Party) MP who was to become [Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies](/source/Under-Secretary_of_State_for_War_and_the_Colonies) in 1830. It approximately corresponds to the southeastern part of the [Avon Land District](/source/Avon_Land_District) which forms the basis for land titles in the area.[1]
