**Howe** is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area#United_States) and [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) in [Lima Township](/source/Lima_Township,_LaGrange_County,_Indiana), [LaGrange County](/source/LaGrange_County,_Indiana), [Indiana](/source/Indiana). As of the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census), Howe had a population of 610.[2]

## History

Howe was settled in 1834. At that time, it was named "Mongoquinong", a name that the [Potawatomi](/source/Potawatomi) people had given to the prairie in northeastern Indiana. Shortly thereafter it was renamed "Lima" and was, at that time, the [county seat](/source/County_seat). It was later renamed "Howe" after John B. Howe, a local attorney.[3]

The [Howe Military School](/source/Howe_Military_School), the town's most famous attraction, was founded in 1884.

## Geography

Howe is located in northern LaGrange County at the intersection of [State Road 120](/source/State_Road_120_(Indiana)) and [State Road 9](/source/State_Road_9_(Indiana)). It is the principal community in Lima Township. It is 2 miles (3 km) south of Interstate 80/90 (the [Indiana Toll Road](/source/Indiana_Toll_Road)), and 5 miles (8 km) north of [LaGrange](/source/LaGrange,_Indiana), the county seat.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Howe census-designated place has an area of 1.8 sq mi (4.6 square kilometres), all of it recorded as land.[4] The [Pigeon River](/source/Pigeon_River_(St._Joseph_River_tributary)), a tributary of the [St. Joseph River](/source/St._Joseph_River_(Lake_Michigan)), flows westward along the southern edge of the community.
