'''Howard "Howdy" Samuel Holmes III''' (born December 14, 1947)<ref>{{Cite web |title=Howdy Holmes |url=https://www.champcarstats.com/drivers/HolmesHowdy.htm |access-date=2022-11-23 |website=www.champcarstats.com}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Brown |first=Allen |title=Howdy Holmes |url=https://www.oldracingcars.com/driver/Howdy_Holmes |access-date=2022-11-23 |website=OldRacingCars.com |language=en}}</ref> is an American former racing driver in the [CART](/source/Champ_Car) [Championship Car](/source/Championship_Car) series. He began racing in the early 1970s and was based in [Stockbridge, Michigan](/source/Stockbridge%2C_Michigan), about {{convert|36|mi|km}} southeast from downtown Lansing and {{convert|15|mi|km}} northeast of [Chelsea, Michigan](/source/Chelsea%2C_Michigan), where his family owned a milling company.

Holmes raced in the CART series for seven seasons (1979-1980, 1982-1985, and 1988), with 72 career starts, including the [Indianapolis 500](/source/Indianapolis_500) each of those years except 1980. He finished in the top-ten 26 times, with his best finish in second position in 1984 at Phoenix. He was the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the year in 1979, with a seventh-place finish. In 1978, he was the [Formula Atlantic champion](/source/Champ_Car_Atlantic_Series).

Holmes is currently the President of [Chelsea Milling Company](/source/Jiffy_mix), his family's firm that was founded in 1901. His grandmother [Mabel White Holmes](/source/Mabel_White_Holmes) became famous for inventing the Jiffy line of baking mixes in 1930, and the family brand served as a sponsor for his cars.

== Indy car career (USAC and CART)==
Holmes was born in [Ann Arbor, Michigan](/source/Ann_Arbor%2C_Michigan). He would make his IndyCar debut in the [USAC National Championship](/source/List_of_USAC_Championship_Car_seasons) during [1979](/source/1979_USAC_Championship_Car_season) for AMI Racing in the No. 46 [Jiffy Mixes](/source/Jiffy_mix)/Armstrong Mould [Wildcat Mk. 2](/source/Patrick_Racing)-[Drake Goosen Sparks](/source/Offenhauser) at the [Indianapolis 500](/source/1979_Indianapolis_500). In the race Holmes qualified in 13th place and was the only rookie to qualify, meaning Holmes won the [rookie of the year award](/source/Indianapolis_500_Rookie_of_the_Year). Holmes finished the race in seventh place. Holmes drove a second race, the [Music 500 Presented by Musicland & Sam Goody](/source/Pocono_IndyCar_500) at [Pocono International Raceway](/source/Pocono_Raceway), starting and finishing seventh. Holmes finished 12th in the USAC points, while going unranked towards the rival [SCCA/CART PPG World Series](/source/Champ_Car) due to Indianapolis counting towards the points for drivers competing in their championship.

In [1980](/source/1980_IndyCar_season), USAC and CART merged to form the [Championship Racing League](/source/1980_USAC_Championship_Car_season) while also counting for points in the CART championship. Holmes returned with AMI Racing to drive the No. 43 [Jiffy Mixes](/source/Jiffy_mix)/Armstrong Mould [Orbitor](/source/March_Engineering)-[Cosworth DFX](/source/Cosworth). While Holmes was attempting to qualify the car he spun out and missed the race in that car. Holmes also tried to qualify AMI's No. 45 Armstrong Mould [Lola T6000](/source/Lola_Cars)-[Cosworth DFX](/source/Cosworth), failing to qualify in that car also. During the season, the Orbitor showed some promise, such as qualifying sixth at the [Kent Oil 150](/source/Camping_World_Grand_Prix_at_The_Glen) at [Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit](/source/Watkins_Glen_International) and an eighth-place finish at the [True Value 500](/source/Pocono_IndyCar_500) at [Pocono International Raceway](/source/Pocono_Raceway). Holmes finished 12th in the CRL/USAC standings and 22nd in the CART standings. Holmes did not compete in any races in [1981](/source/1981_IndyCar_season).

In [1982](/source/1982_IndyCar_season), Holmes drove for [Doug Shierson Racing](/source/Doug_Shierson_Racing) in the No. 30 [Domino's Pizza](/source/Domino's_Pizza) March 82C-Cosworth DFX. During the season Holmes got best finishes of fourth at the [Provimi Veal Tony Bettenhausen 200](/source/Milwaukee_IndyFest) at [Wisconsin State Fairgrounds Park Speedway](/source/Milwaukee_Mile) and fifth at the [Detroit News Grand Prix](/source/Firestone_Indy_400) at [Michigan International Speedway](/source/Michigan_International_Speedway) to finish 13th in points. During this year, Holmes qualified for the [Indianapolis 500](/source/1982_Indianapolis_500) (counted towards the [USAC Gold Crown Championship](/source/1981%E2%80%9382_USAC_Championship_Car_season)) to finish tenth in the race and 26th in the USAC standings.

For [1983](/source/1983_IndyCar_season), Holmes returned with [Doug Shierson Racing](/source/Doug_Shierson_Racing) to drive the No. 30 Domino's Pizza March 83C-Cosworth. During the year Holmes got a best finish of fifth at the [Cribari Wines 300K](/source/Monterey_Grand_Prix) at [Laguna Seca Raceway](/source/Mazda_Raceway_Laguna_Seca). Holmes also competed in the [Indianapolis 500](/source/1983_Indianapolis_500) (sanctioned by [USAC](/source/United_States_Automobile_Club), but counted for points by [CART](/source/Champ_Car)), starting 12th and finishing sixth. Holmes finished 13th in the CART standings and ninth in the USAC standings.

In [1984](/source/1984_IndyCar_season), Holmes joined [Mayer Racing](/source/Teddy_Mayer) to drive the No. 41 Jiffy Mixes March 84C-Cosworth DFX. The season started off well as Holmes finished second to teammate [Tom Sneva](/source/Tom_Sneva) at the [Dana Jimmy Bryan 150](/source/XM_Satellite_Radio_Indy_200) at [Phoenix International Raceway](/source/Phoenix_International_Raceway). Holmes then qualified second to Sneva at the [Indianapolis 500](/source/1984_Indianapolis_500). Holmes' car suffered mechanical problems throughout the race and Holmes finished 13th, 15 laps down. The rest of the season brought some more points finishes, although none were as good as Holme's early season form. Holmes finished the season 12th in the CART points and unranked in the USAC points due to scoring no points at Indianapolis.

For [1985](/source/1985_IndyCar_season), Holmes joined [Forsythe Racing](/source/Forsythe_Racing) to drive the No. 33 Jiffy Mixes [Lola T85/00](/source/Lola_Cars)-Cosworth DFX. Holmes got a best finish of ninth at the [Michigan 500](/source/Firestone_Indy_400) at [Michigan International Speedway](/source/Michigan_International_Speedway). Holmes also finished 10th at the [Indianapolis 500](/source/1985_Indianapolis_500), despite a collision with [Rich Vogler](/source/Rich_Vogler) that caused Vogler and Tom Sneva to crash. Following the [Detroit News 200](/source/Firestone_Indy_400) at Michigan International Speedway Holmes was replaced by [Jan Lammers](/source/Jan_Lammers). Holmes finished the season 25th in the CART standings and tenth in the USAC standings. Holmes did not compete in any races in [1986](/source/1986_IndyCar_season) or [1987](/source/1987_IndyCar_season).

In [1988](/source/1988_IndyCar_season), Holmes drove for Morales Motorsports in the No. 21 Jiffy Mixes March 88C-Cosworth DFX. During the season Holmes got a best finish of seventh at the [Quaker State 500](/source/Pocono_IndyCar_500) at Pocono International Raceway. Holmes also had a good run at the [Indianapolis 500](/source/1988_Indianapolis_500), starting 33rd (last) and finishing 12th. Holmes finished the season with an eighth-place finish at the [Nissan Indy Challenge](/source/Grand_Prix_of_Miami_(Indycar)) at [Tamiami Park](/source/Tamiami_Park) in what was Holmes' final Indy car race. Holmes finished 18th in the CART standings and 12th in the USAC standings.

==Post racing career==
After retiring from racing, Holmes became the president of [Chelsea Milling Company](/source/Chelsea_Milling_Company), the manufacturer of [Jiffy Mixes](/source/Jiffy_mix), which was invented by Holmes' grandmother [Mabel White Holmes](/source/Mabel_White_Holmes). Holmes has also made appearances at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Legends Day (a day that honors past drivers of the [Indianapolis 500](/source/Indianapolis_500)) and other times simply as a spectator or guest of [Chip Ganassi Racing](/source/Chip_Ganassi_Racing), of which Jiffy has been an associate sponsor since 2023.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Martin |first=Bruce |date=2023-10-29 |title=Howdy Holmes back in IndyCar as a congenial supporter and sponsor for Chip Ganassi |url=https://www.nbcsports.com/motor-sports/news/howdy-holmes-back-in-indycar-sponsor-for-chip-ganassi-racing-jiffy-mix |access-date=2025-11-08 |website=NBC Sports |language=en-US}}</ref>
