# Howard Pearce

**Howard John Stredder Pearce**, [CVO](/source/Royal_Victorian_Order) (born 13 April 1949, in [Twickenham](/source/Twickenham)) is a British diplomat who served as the [Governor of the Falkland Islands](/source/Governor_of_the_Falkland_Islands) and [Civil Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands](/source/Civil_Commissioner_of_South_Georgia_and_the_South_Sandwich_Islands) (SGSSI) until July 2006. He assumed both positions on 3 December 2002. Before his appointment, Pearce was [High Commissioner](/source/High_Commissioner) to [Malta](/source/Malta) from 1999 to 2002. He joined the [Foreign and Commonwealth Office](/source/Foreign_and_Commonwealth_Office) (FCO) in 1972.

Pearce attended the [City of London School](/source/City_of_London_School). He married Caroline Thomée, a Dutch architect and photographer in October 2004. He is the first Governor to marry in the [Falkland Islands](/source/Falkland_Islands); on the day of the wedding, local schoolchildren were given the day off. A bell was also rung at a church in [Grytviken](/source/Grytviken) on [South Georgia](/source/South_Georgia).

At the end of July 2006, Pearce left the Falklands and was succeeded as Falkland Islands Governor and Commissioner for SGSSI by [Alan Huckle](/source/Alan_Huckle), previously governor of [Anguilla](/source/Anguilla), another British overseas territory in the [Caribbean](/source/Caribbean_Sea). Upon leaving the Falklands, he semi-retired and moved to [Dundee](/source/Dundee), [Scotland](/source/Scotland).
