Milstein is the son of Irma Milstein and [Paul Milstein](/source/Paul_Milstein), a real estate developer. He graduated from [Cornell University](/source/Cornell_University) with a B.A. in economics in 1973 and from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) with a [JD/MBA](/source/JD%2FMBA) in 1977. Milstein started his career at the [investment bank](/source/investment_bank) Warburg Paribas Becker.
