Berk worked as a reporter for ''The Havana Herald'' in Cuba in the 1950s.<ref name="hollywoodreporterobit"/> He also worked for the [Associated Press](/source/Associated_Press).<ref name="hollywoodreporterobit"/> He taught at his alma mater, the [University of Georgia](/source/University_of_Georgia),<ref name="varietyobit"/> and authored four novels.<ref name="hollywoodreporterobit"/>

Berk wrote several episodes of television series ''[Columbo](/source/Columbo)'', ''[Mission: Impossible](/source/Mission%3A_Impossible_(1966_TV_series))'', and ''[McMillan & Wife](/source/McMillan_%26_Wife)''.
