'''Howald''' ({{IPA|de|ˈhoːvalt}}; {{langx|lb|Houwald}}) is a town in the [commune](/source/Communes_of_Luxembourg) of [Hesperange](/source/Hesperange), in southern [Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg). The town merges almost seamlessly with [Luxembourg City](/source/Luxembourg_(city))'s south-eastern [suburb](/source/suburb)an [quarter](/source/Quarters_of_Luxembourg_City) of [South Bonnevoie](/source/South_Bonnevoie), which lies to the north of Howald. {{As of|2025}}, the town has a population of 5,914,<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://data.public.lu/fr/datasets/registre-national-des-personnes-physiques-rnpp-population-par-localite-population-per-locality/ |title=Registre national des personnes physiques RNPP : Population par localité |date=2025-09-30 |website=data.public.lu}}</ref> making it the most populous town in the commune and the 22nd-most populous in Luxembourg.

Through Howald runs the ''route de Thionville'', one of Luxembourg's historically most-important roads, which runs from Luxembourg City to the [French](/source/France) town of [Thionville](/source/Thionville) (which had been a part of Luxembourg until 1659). However, for cross-border travel, this has since been supplanted by the [A3 motorway](/source/A3_motorway_(Luxembourg)), which connects the same two cities via [Bettembourg](/source/Bettembourg) and [Dudelange](/source/Dudelange), and the northern terminus of which is just to the west of the town, on the other side of the railway track. A [railway station](/source/Howald_railway_station) opened in Howald in December 2017.

From 20 February 1882 until 22 May 1955 a steam railway line from Luxembourg to Remich ran alongside the route de Thionville through Howald. The train was affectionately referred to as the "Jangeli", a name evoking the sound that the train made.<ref>{{Cite web|title = Ligne Luxembourg - Remich|url = http://www.rail.lu/ligneluxembourgremich.html|website = www.rail.lu|access-date = 2015-12-28}}</ref> The name Jangeli is still maintained as the bus stop location on the Route de Thionville in Howald.

Howald's role as a suburb of Luxembourg City is highlighted by the town's youth. As recently as 1885, the town had a population of only 21 people.<ref name="La localité de Howald">{{cite web |url=http://www.hesper.lu/Default.aspx?id=ced50033-d2ff-480c-807f-2be269396af1 |title=La localité de Howald |access-date=2007-06-13 |last=Muller |first=Roger |publisher=Commune of Hesperange |language=fr |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070928011312/http://www.hesper.lu/Default.aspx?id=ced50033-d2ff-480c-807f-2be269396af1 |archive-date=2007-09-28 }}</ref> Even until the [Second World War](/source/World_War_II), the town was limited almost exclusively to lining the sides of the ''route de Thionville''.<ref name="La localité de Howald" /> However, since the 1960s, the creation of two development [zoning](/source/zoning) areas, on either side of the ''route de Thionville'', has seen the town expand dramatically,<ref name="La localité de Howald" /> such that it is now the largest town in the commune of [Hesperange](/source/Hesperange).
