'''Houston Stewart Channel''' is a strait in [Haida Gwaii](/source/Haida_Gwaii), [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada). It separates [Moresby Island](/source/Moresby_Island) and [Kunghit Island](/source/Kunghit_Island).

Houston Stewart Channel was given its name by [James Charles Prevost](/source/James_Charles_Prevost)<!--is this the right Prevost?--> in 1853, in honour of [William Houston Stewart](/source/William_Houston_Stewart), his predecessor aboard ''[''HMS Virago''](/source/HMS_Virago_(1842))''. [Maritime fur trade](/source/Maritime_fur_trade)r [George Dixon](/source/George_Dixon_(Royal_Navy_officer)) called it Ibberston Sound in 1787. American fur traders called it Barrell Sound, so-named by [John Kendrick](/source/John_Kendrick_(American_sea_captain)) and [Robert Gray](/source/Robert_Gray_(sea_captain)) in 1789, in honour of Joseph Barrell, one of the owners of the ships ''[Columbia Rediviva](/source/Columbia_Rediviva)'' and ''[Lady Washington](/source/Lady_Washington)''.
