'''Hotton''' ({{IPA|fr|ɔtɔ̃}}; {{langx|wa|Houton}}) is a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Belgium) of [Wallonia](/source/Wallonia) located in the [province of Luxembourg](/source/Luxembourg_(Belgium)), [Belgium](/source/Belgium).
The municipality lies 12 kilometers from [Marche-en-Famenne](/source/Marche-en-Famenne) in the [Ardennes](/source/Ardennes) and has more than 5,400 inhabitants. The river [Ourthe](/source/Ourthe) crosses Hotton.

The municipality consists of the following districts: [Hampteau](/source/Hampteau), Hotton, [Marenne](/source/Marenne) and [Fronville](/source/Fronville%2C_Wallonia). There are also several hamlets: Bourdon, Deulin, Ménil-Favay, Monville, Monteuville, Melreux, [Ny](/source/Ny%2C_Belgium) and Werpin.

The municipality lies in the [Arrondissement of Marche-en-Famenne](/source/Arrondissement_of_Marche-en-Famenne). In the west it borders the [province of Namur](/source/Namur_Province).

==History==
The first history of Hotton dates from Roman times, when Hotton was an [oppidum](/source/oppidum). Multiple Roman excavations have been found at [Ti-Château](/source/Ti-Ch%C3%A2teau), a strengthened Roman encampment. The village of Hotton was first mentioned in medieval documents as ''Hottine'' in 1187. Hotton was part of the medieval county of [La Roche](/source/La_Roche-en-Ardenne) till the 16th century, when it was taken over by the lords of Montaigu. In 1791, Hotton became a free village.<ref>{{in lang|fr}} [http://www.hotton.be/tourisme/cartes-plans/un-peu-dhistoire Commune d'Hotton], consulted 5 April 2013</ref>

In the afternoon of 11 May 1940, Hotton was captured and occupied by the [5th Panzer Division](/source/5th_Panzer_Division_(Wehrmacht)) during the [Battle of Belgium](/source/Battle_of_Belgium). Allied forces tried in vain to blow up the steel bridge over the Ourthe in an attempt to slow down German forces. Hotton played an important role during the [Battle of the Bulge](/source/Battle_of_the_Bulge), as German troops ([116th Panzer Division](/source/116th_Panzer_Division) ''Der Windhund'' and the [560th Volksgrenadier Division](/source/560th_Volksgrenadier_Division_(Wehrmacht))) reached here the most western point of their advance, being stopped by the American [84th Infantry Division](/source/84th_Division_(United_States)) ''Railsplitters''.<ref>[Dutch Wikipedia, ''Hotton''](/source/w%3Anl%3AHotton), consulted 5 April 2013</ref>

The current municipality was founded in 1977, when the municipalities of Hampteau, Fronville and Marenne were added to the municipality of Hotton.

The [Hotton War Cemetery](/source/Hotton_War_Cemetery) is home to British [World War II](/source/World_War_II) war dead.

==Tourism==
Hotton is a very popular place with tourists and is known for its [speleothem](/source/speleothem) [caves](/source/caves), known as the [Caves of Hotton](/source/Caves_of_Hotton). A small [Commonwealth war cemetery](/source/Commonwealth_War_Graves_Commission) with 660 graves is also situated just outside Hotton, [Hotton War Cemetery](/source/Hotton_War_Cemetery). Other tourist attractions are [Deulin Castle](/source/Deulin_Castle), the [Virgin of Werpin](/source/Virgin_of_Werpin), the [Faber Mill](/source/Faber_Mill), [St. Peter's Church, Melreux](/source/St._Peter's_Church%2C_Melreux) and [Riveo Centre](/source/Riveo_Centre).

The well-known annual hot air balloon festival ''Hottolfiades'' is held in August. The annual fair (also held in August) claims to be the largest fair of the arrondissement.
