The Hotel Montclair was located above Montclair on Crestmont Road on the [First Mountain](/source/Watchung_Mountains) at the border with [Verona](/source/Verona%2C_New_Jersey). Opened on May 1, 1907, the hotel catered primarily to long-term summer guests, among them [John Franklin Fort](/source/John_Franklin_Fort), a governor of the state.<ref name=NJersey/> On June 28, 1913, the dedication of Montclair's fourth [Delaware and Lackawanna](/source/Delaware%2C_Lackawanna_and_Western_Railroad) station was celebrated there.<ref name=postcards/> Paul Wilcox, a lawyer also instrumental in the founding of the nearby [Montclair Golf Club](/source/Montclair_Golf_Club), played a major role in its establishment and was its manager.<ref name=postcards/><ref name=Rock>{{Cite web|url=https://rockcliffeapartment.com/about/history/|title=History |website=Rockcliffe Apartments |accessdate=December 11, 2019 }}</ref> After the repeal of [Prohibition](/source/Prohibition) in 1933, alcoholic beverages were made available in the hotel.
