**Hossein Kalani** ([Persian](/source/Persian_language): حسین کلانی; born January 23, 1945, in [Tehran](/source/Tehran)) is a retired [Iranian](/source/Iran) [football](/source/Football_(soccer)) [striker](/source/Striker_(association_football)) who played for [Shahin](/source/Shahin_F.C.), [Persepolis](/source/Persepolis_F.C.), [Paykan Tehran](/source/Paykan_Tehran_F.C.), [Shahbaz](/source/Shahbaz_F.C.) and the [Iran national football team](/source/Iran_national_football_team). He was named as one of the members of [Persepolis F.C.](/source/Persepolis_F.C.) Hall of Fame and the club thanked him for his great performance during his senior career at Persepolis. The club presented him with a [bust](/source/Bust_(sculpture)) of his likeness and named him as one of the twelve great players of Persepolis in the 1970s.[1][2][3][4]

## Early life

Kalani was born in the city of [Khorramabad](/source/Khorramabad), but spent his childhood and adolescence in [Tehran](/source/Tehran).[5] He developed an interest in football at an early age, playing with friends on the clay pitches of southern Tehran.

## Club career

In 1965, Kalani was promoted to the first team of [Shahin](/source/Shahin_Tehran_F.C.) by [Abbas Ekrami](/source/Abbas_Ekrami), due to his impressive performances in the youth side. However, Kalani faced an injury which sidelined him for two years, During this time, Kalani played with legendary strikers such as [Homayoun Behzadi](/source/Homayoun_Behzadi) and [Hamid Shirzadegan](/source/Hamid_Shirzadegan).

In 1968, Kalani joined [Persepolis](/source/Persepolis_F.C.), where he would go on to cement his legacy as one of the best players to ever play for the club. Kalani also played for clubs such as [Paykan](/source/Paykan_F.C.), another stint at [Persepolis](/source/Persepolis_F.C.), and lastly [Shahbaz](/source/Shahbaz_F.C.).

## International career

In 1967, Kalani was called up to the [Iran national football team](/source/Iran_national_football_team) for the [1967 RCD Cup](/source/1967_RCD_Cup). Where he made his debut against [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan_national_football_team).[6][7] The next year, Kalani participated with the national squad for the [1968 Asian Cup](/source/1968_AFC_Asian_Cup), where he was also included into the final.[8]

In 1969, Kalani was present with the national team for their participation in the [1969 RCD Cup](/source/1969_RCD_Cup). In the tournament, he scored a brace against [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan_national_football_team).[9][10] He also played in the [1970 RCD Cup](/source/1970_RCD_Cup), where he scored in a seven to nil win against [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan_national_football_team).[11]

In 1972, Kalani notably scored a [hat-trick](/source/Hat-trick) against arch-rivals [Iraq](/source/Iraq_national_football_team) in the group stages of the [1972 AFC Asian Cup](/source/1972_AFC_Asian_Cup), as well as scoring a goal in the [1972 Asian Cup final](/source/1972_AFC_Asian_Cup_final) against [South Korea](/source/South_Korea_national_football_team).[12][13]
