**Hospital** is a [district](/source/Districts_of_Costa_Rica) of the [San José](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9_(canton)) canton, in the [San José](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9_Province) province of [Costa Rica](/source/Costa_Rica). It is one of the four administrative units that form [San José](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) downtown properly. The district houses, along with [Merced district](/source/Merced%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica), the main commercial activity of the city, and is the most populous of the four central districts.[1][2]

## Geography

Hospital has an area of 3.3 km2[3] and an elevation of 1160 metres.[1]

It lies in the center of the canton, the only one which limits with districts of San José and not with other [cantons](/source/Cantons_of_Costa_Rica). The district borders (clockwards) with [Merced](/source/Merced%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) district to the north, [El Carmen](/source/El_Carmen%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) and [Catedral](/source/Catedral%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9%2C_Costa_Rica) districts to the east, [San Sebastián](/source/San_Sebasti%C3%A1n_District%2C_San_Jos%C3%A9) and [Hatillo](/source/Hatillo_District) districts to the south, and [Mata Redonda](/source/Mata_Redonda_District) district to the west.[4]

This district comprehend several "barrios" or neighbourhoods, like Almendares, Ángeles, Bolívar, Cant, Colón (part of it), La Merced, Pacífico (part of it), Pinos, Salubridad, San Bosco, San Francisco, Santa Lucía and Silos.
