Benedictine priory in Dorset, England

This article is about the priory in Dorset. For the priory near Folkestone in Kent, see [Monks Horton](/source/Monks_Horton).

**Horton Priory** was a [priory](/source/Priory) at [Horton](/source/Horton%2C_Dorset) in [Dorset](/source/Dorset), [England](/source/England).

It was founded as a Benedictine abbey around 970 by [Ordgar, Earl of Devon](/source/Ordgar%2C_Ealdorman_of_Devon),[1] or his son, Ordulph, and dedicated to [Saint Olfrida, Wilfrida or Wulfthryth](/source/Wulfthryth_of_Wilton), the mother of Saint [Edith of Wilton](/source/Edith_of_Wilton) by King [Edgar the Peaceful](/source/Edgar_the_Peaceful). In the early twelfth century it was reduced to priory status by [Roger, bishop of Salisbury](/source/Roger_of_Salisbury) and made dependent on [Sherborne Abbey](/source/Sherborne_Abbey).[2]

At the Dissolution in 1539 Sherborne Abbey was surrendered to the king, and in 1547 it was granted to [Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset](/source/Edward_Seymour%2C_1st_Duke_of_Somerset). On Somerset's attainder it was granted to [William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke](/source/William_Herbert%2C_1st_Earl_of_Pembroke_(1501%E2%80%931570)).[2] The present Horton parish church, St. Wolfrida, was built on the site of the priory in the 18th century. No traces of the original priory remain.[1]
