**Horod** (Cyrl: город) from [Old Slavonic](/source/Proto-Slavic) *[gord](/source/Gord_(archaeology))* is a version of the [Slavic](/source/Slavic_languages) word meaning "town", "city" or "castle", also found in [Slavic languages](/source/Slavic_languages) as *[grad](/source/Grad_(toponymy))* or *[gorod](/source/Gorod_(toponymy))*.

It is mostly found in [Czech](/source/Czech_language), [Slovak](/source/Slovak_language), [Belarusian](/source/Belarusian_language) and [Ukrainian](/source/Ukrainian_language), which, unlike the other Slavic languages, do not use hard 'g' except in loanwords.
