**Horatio Nelson Davis** (June 17, 1812 – February 15, 1907) was an [American](/source/Americans) banker, [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) politician, and [Wisconsin](/source/Wisconsin) pioneer. He was the 13th and 15th mayor of [Beloit, Wisconsin](/source/Beloit%2C_Wisconsin), and represented [Rock County](/source/Rock_County%2C_Wisconsin) in the [Wisconsin State Senate](/source/Wisconsin_State_Senate) for four years. He was the father of [Cushman Kellogg Davis](/source/Cushman_Kellogg_Davis), who served as a U.S. senator and [Governor of Minnesota](/source/Governor_of_Minnesota).

## Biography

Davis was born in [Henderson, New York](/source/Henderson%2C_New_York).[1] During the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War), he was commissioned a [captain](/source/Captain_(United_States_O-3)) in the [Union Army](/source/Union_Army) for the [commissary](/source/Commissary) and subsistence department. At the end of the war, he received an honorary [brevet](/source/Brevet_(military)#American_Civil_War) to [major](/source/Major_(United_States)). Afterwards, he became a bank president. His son, [Cushman Kellogg Davis](/source/Cushman_Kellogg_Davis), became a member of the [United States Senate](/source/United_States_Senate) and [Governor of Minnesota](/source/Governor_of_Minnesota).

## Political career

Davis represented the [17th District](/source/Wisconsin_Senate%2C_District_17) in the Senate during the 1873, 1874, 1875 and 1876 sessions.[2] Other positions he held include Mayor of [Beloit, Wisconsin](/source/Beloit%2C_Wisconsin) from 1873 to 1877. He was a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_of_Wisconsin).

Davis was alive to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary in 1887,[3] and to receive his son on the family farm in 1890.[4] Davis died in Buffalo, New York at the age of 94, having "retained his mental and physical faculties almost to the end".[5][6]
