Born in [Onondaga County, New York](/source/Onondaga_County%2C_New_York), Patch went to [Cazenovia Academy](/source/Cazenovia_Academy). He then practiced law in [Ohio](/source/Ohio). In 1843, Patch moved to [Whitewater](/source/Whitewater%2C_Wisconsin) and then to [Calamus](/source/Calamus%2C_Wisconsin), Wisconsin Territory. He then moved to [Beaver Dam, Wisconsin](/source/Beaver_Dam%2C_Wisconsin)<ref name="Obit">{{cite news |title=Death of Capt. H. D.
