# Honister Pass

**Honister Pass** is a [mountain pass](/source/Mountain_pass) in the [Lake District](/source/Lake_District) in [Cumbria](/source/Cumbria), England. It is located on the [B5289 road](/source/B5289_road), linking [Seatoller](/source/Seatoller), in the valley of [Borrowdale](/source/Borrowdale), to [Gatesgarth](/source/Gatesgarth) at the southern end of [Buttermere](/source/Buttermere). The pass reaches an elevation of 1,167 feet (356 m), making it one of the highest in the region, and also one of the steepest, with [gradients](/source/Grade_(slope)) of up to 1-in-4 (25%).[1] The [saddle](/source/Saddle_(landform)) at the [watershed](/source/Drainage_divide) is known as **Honister Hause**, using the [Cumbrian](/source/Cumbrian_dialect) word *hause* for such a feature.

Honister Pass is one of three passes that link the tourist area around [Keswick](/source/Keswick%2C_Cumbria), including [Derwent Water](/source/Derwent_Water) and Borrowdale, with the valley of the [River Cocker](/source/River_Cocker%2C_Cumbria), including the lakes of Buttermere, [Crummock Water](/source/Crummock_Water) and [Loweswater](/source/Loweswater). From north to south these passes are [Whinlatter Pass](/source/Whinlatter_Pass), [Newlands Pass](/source/Newlands_Pass) and Honister Pass.[2]

[Honister Slate Mine](/source/Honister_Slate_Mine) and Honister Hause [Youth Hostel](/source/Youth_Hostel) are located at the summit of the pass.

[Footpaths](/source/Trail) lead from the summit of the pass to [Fleetwith Pike](/source/Fleetwith_Pike) to the west, [Grey Knotts](/source/Grey_Knotts) to the south, and [Dale Head](/source/Dale_Head) to the north.[3]

Honister Pass holds the UK 24-hour rainfall record; in the 24 hours to 6 pm on 5 December 2015 during [Storm Desmond](/source/Storm_Desmond), 341.4 mm (13.44 in) of rain fell there.[4]
