# Hofoper

**Hofoper** is German for a [court](/source/Court_(royal)) opera house or company, particularly for imperial, royal, electoral, or princely courts. Many of these have since been renamed *Staatsoper* ("State Opera") or *Städtische Oper* ("Municipal Opera") as the courts went defunct.
